Kirsy's Makeup Journey and Adaptable Makeup Tutorial

by Kirsy Rodriguez

Ever since I was little girl I've always liked makeup, something about it always caught my eye. I remember when I was around five years old I used to get into my mother's makeup bag and pullout one of her lipsticks to put it on. Actually, it was more like slathering it on since not just my lips got some of the lipstick action. Then when I was in junior high school I remember sneaking out one of her lipsticks and hiding it under the cushion of my wheelchair and putting it on right before arriving to school on the yellow bus. I know, I was such a little rebel. I wish I could say that I didn't get caught but nothing got passed my Dominican mother. Thankfully, all that sneaking around ended once I started high school and I was finally allowed to put on a little lipstick without having to hide it from mom. It was such a liberating moment, apart from getting my first power chair of course.

As the years went by my love for makeup only grew more. Not only was it fun and something that brought me a lot of joy as well as relaxation (I mean, put some music while I'm doing my makeup and I get in the zone) but there was something about doing my own makeup that gave me, and still does, a great sense of freedom and independence. To some it might be insignificant, but to those who are constantly dependent on others moment like this mean the world.
And as someone with a physical disability who needs complete care, having this sense of independence is priceless and it goes far beyond the superficial for me.

Makeup is also away for me to express myself. Very much like painting on a canvas that's what doing my makeup feels like for me. It is also away I express my femininity. I always say, though I may have a disability that doesn't take away from the fact that I am above all a woman. I like lipstick on my lips, blush on my cheeks, a delicate perfume on my neck and clothing that allows me to express my feminine charm. Something that we hardly see portrayed often in the media. But as more women with disabilities come out making their voices heard regarding the lack of representation in the beauty and fashion world. And projects such as the Raw Beauty NYC Project which embraces the uniqueness and beauty of women with disabilities, the industry will have no choice but to take notice and embrace it themselves completely.

My hope is that through my videos and blog posts I can bring my little grain of sand to this movement. And to also show that beauty is not exclusive to some but all.

Check out my first makeup tutorial video on YouTube below and my "Sweet Smokey Eye Look" for Valentine's Day here.

Kirsy Rodriguez is 32 years old and was born in the Dominican Republic but raised in New York City. After graduating high school she briefly worked with a theater company as a teaching artist which was a great memorable experience for her. Later on she attended college and received an Associate's in Mental Health and Human Services and through a work readiness program she got to internship at aen organization specifically for women with disabilities. There she was given the opportunity to create a workshop titled: The Do's and Don'ts of Fashion in the Workplace. Where she taught young women with various disabilities how to dress for a job interview as well as how to apply makeup. Not only was this a great learning experience for her but one that was very rewarding as well. Last year Kirsy launch her personal blog titled Barrier Free Me. There she shares her love of fashion and beauty as well as other things that are close to her heart.
